  • Ferus Smit has launched Kolland, a new hybrid ice-class cargo vessel for Erik Thun Group.
  • The ship measures 89 meters in length and is built to Finnish/Swedish Ice Class 1B standards.
  • Its optimized bow design allows higher cargo intake with reduced energy use in restricted waterways.
  • Hybrid propulsion with battery support and a controllable-pitch propeller ensures efficiency in both open seas and ice conditions.

Dutch shipbuilder Ferus Smit has launched a new dry cargo vessel, Kolland, for Swedish shipping company Erik Thun Group. The vessel is the latest in a series of hybrid ice-class ships designed to balance efficiency and environmental performance, as noted by Baird Maritime.

The 89-meter Kolland has a moulded beam of 13.35 meters, draught of 6.24 meters, deadweight of 5,100 tons, and a cargo hold capacity of about 5,830 cubic meters. Built to Finnish/Swedish Ice Class 1B standards, the vessel features an optimized bow that supports higher cargo intake while reducing energy use, particularly in restricted waterways such as Lake Vanern and surrounding canals leading to the North Sea.

Its hybrid propulsion system incorporates a battery pack to enable peak shaving, limiting reliance on auxiliary engines and lowering emissions. A large-diameter controllable-pitch propeller in a nozzle provides higher thrust at lower speeds, improving efficiency during rough conditions and icebreaking operations..
