The FIN-EST Green Corridor, a sustainable maritime initiative linking Helsinki and Tallinn, has approved 19 projects to push forward its climate neutrality goals. Originating from a 2023 memorandum of understanding (MoU), this ambitious effort includes the active collaboration of Helsinki, Tallinn, and multiple stakeholders across the maritime industry.
Key Areas of Focus for Approved Projects
- Transition to Green Fuels
This initiative includes studies to secure the availability of green fuels and establish safety guidelines to support cleaner maritime operations across the corridor. - Zero-Emission Port Infrastructure
Projects will introduce zero-emission service vehicles and upgrade port facilities with sustainable infrastructure, aiming to reduce port-related emissions significantly. - Digital and Carbon Capture Technologies
New digital tools will monitor and optimize fuel efficiency on ferries, while carbon capture technology will be explored to help minimize emissions further. - Enhanced Waste Management and Sustainable Travel
Ports will enhance waste sorting and recycling systems to manage ship-generated waste more sustainably, with additional initiatives to improve cycling access and experience for passengers, promoting sustainable travel between Helsinki and Tallinn.
Collaborative Commitment to Sustainable Maritime Practices
Valdo Kalm, CEO of Port of Tallinn, emphasized the project’s goal of a climate-neutral corridor and its potential as a model for future green shipping corridors worldwide. Meanwhile, Ville Haapasaari, CEO of Port of Helsinki, noted the project’s unique scope and progress as a leading example of sustainable maritime operations, stressing the importance of reducing emissions across the entire transportation chain.
