At the Indo Defence Expo & Forum currently underway in Jakarta, Fincantieri, the global shipbuilding leader, and PT PRIMA MAJU MAPAN (PMM), an Indonesian defense and surveillance technology firm, have signed a Technical Collaboration Agreement to jointly address unconventional underwater threats and enhance protection of critical underwater infrastructure in Indonesia.

The agreement was signed by Mauro Manzini, Vice President Sales, Fincantieri Naval Vessels Division, and Adrianus Prima Manggala, Commissioner of PMM, marking a significant milestone in Italy–Indonesia defense cooperation.

Safeguarding Underwater Infrastructure

The collaboration targets the development of advanced systems to protect undersea cables, pipelines, naval bases, ports, and offshore installations, recognizing the growing importance of underwater security in the face of emerging challenges.

The initiative aligns with Indonesia’s vision to bolster its technological sovereignty in the defense sector, especially in the underwater domain. With PMM’s expertise in electronic systems and Fincantieri’s proven track record in submarine and naval platform construction, the partnership promises to deliver high-tech, locally integrated solutions.

Deepening Italy–Indonesia Maritime Cooperation

Fincantieri has already established strong ties with the Indonesian defense sector, having delivered two PPA-class frigates to the Indonesian Navy. Southeast Asia is a priority growth region for the Italian shipbuilding group, which aims to expand its footprint through long-term partnerships and localization strategies.

The company’s global reputation is anchored in over 180 submarines constructed since the early 20th century, and its leadership in the Italian National Underwater Hub further solidifies its standing in the field.

Combining Global Expertise with Local Capability

PMM brings Indonesian engineering strength in communications, surveillance, and system integration, with a history of delivering robust solutions for maritime and defense applications. Together, the two firms aim to build enduring industrial synergies, supporting both regional security and technology transfer.

This technical collaboration underscores the increasing strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific region in global defense and maritime security, and reflects a shared commitment to innovation, sustainability, and regional stability.
