Under Investigation

The Finnish Customs Office has stated that the tanker, seized for its suspected involvement in damaging undersea cables, will not face a separate criminal investigation regarding its cargo of Russian oil.

The investigation will primarily focus on the alleged sabotage of the subsea cables. Nine crew members are under investigation for their potential involvement in the cable damage. The lawyer representing the owner of the seized tanker argues that the alleged damage to undersea equipment occurred outside of Finnish territorial waters, questioning Finland’s jurisdiction in the matter.

Following a series of incidents involving damaged power cables, telecom links, and gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Baltic Sea nations are on high alert. NATO plans to increase its presence in the region in response to these security concerns.
