Finnlines has taken a major step toward sustainable and high-capacity maritime transport with the signing of a new contract to build next-generation Hansa Superstar-class RoPax vessels. This project continues the long-standing collaboration between Finnlines, Deltamarin, and China Merchants Weihai Shipyard, building on the success of the current Superstar-class vessels. These new ships are tailored for the Finland–Germany route and are set to revolutionize both freight and passenger transport in the Baltic Sea region.
Advanced Design for Modern Maritime Needs
The Hansa Superstar vessels represent a refined evolution of the existing Superstar class, featuring enhancements in passenger comfort, cargo capacity, and route adaptability. Key features include:
-
Tailored designs for longer Finland-Germany crossings
-
New cabin categories and diverse restaurant concepts
-
Enhanced onboard experience for up to 1,100 passengers
-
Multifuel engines (including methanol compatibility) for reduced emissions
-
Over 50% reduction in CO₂ emissions per cargo unit
Each 240-meter-long vessel will accommodate 5,100 lane meters of rolling cargo, 90 cars, and offer 320 cabins, reflecting a perfect balance between transport efficiency and passenger convenience.
Sustainability at the Core
These vessels are designed with net-zero emissions in mind. Features include:
-
Engines capable of running on methanol
-
Optimized hull and propeller design
-
Shore power connections
-
Smart onboard energy management systems
Such technologies ensure reduced environmental impact both at sea and while docked in port, aligning with global decarbonization goals.
Strong Partnership Driving Innovation
The project continues the collaborative success story of the three companies:
-
Deltamarin begins basic design work immediately, with most of it scheduled for completion by early 2026.
-
Weihai Shipyard brings robust shipbuilding expertise, contributing to an impressive record of 22 RoPax ships built with Deltamarin over the past decade.
Leaders from each company highlighted their commitment:
-
Finnlines’ Juha Ahia emphasized how this investment supports sustainable growth and innovation.
-
Deltamarin’s Janne Uotila underlined the trust earned through consistent delivery of efficient vessels.
-
Weihai Shipyard’s Ou Shubo praised the technical expertise and longstanding cooperation with Deltamarin.
The Hansa Superstar-class ships are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2029. Once operational, they will redefine standards in freight and passenger transportation on the Baltic Sea, setting a new benchmark for environmentally conscious, high-capacity maritime travel.
