On January 17, a major fire broke out onboard an oil tanker and twenty six crew members were rescued from the burning tanker.
What happened?
The oil tanker ‘MT Genessa’ was carrying 30,000 tons of high speed oil when a fire broke out onboard the vessel at the Dheenadhayalan port, Kandla.
The fire is said to have originated from the living quarters used by the crew members.
Efforts to douse fire:
Immediately after the fire broke out, the Coast guard swung into action and rescued the crew members. Tugs stationed near the grounding site were dispatched to put off the fire.
Despite efforts by the Indian Coast guard and Indian Oil Corporation, the tanker continues to burn.
Oil spill monitored:
The officials are monitoring and have confined the area to contain any oil spill that may cause environmental damage.
An investigation has been launched into the incident to determine how the fire originated.
