First Joint Azeri Crude Shipment Reaches Omišalj Boosting Energy Security

The first joint shipment of Azeri crude oil, totaling over 92,000 tonnes, has successfully arrived at the Port of Omišalj on Croatia’s Adriatic coast. This milestone stems from a strategic partnership between MVM Group and MOL Group, with the oil sourced from the Ceyhan terminal in Türkiye.

Supporting Diversification & Regional Supply Flexibility

Announced in May 2025, this cooperation aims to diversify crude oil supplies and increase the volume of alternative feedstock processed in MOL’s refineries by up to 160,000 tonnes annually. MOL’s Executive VP of Downstream, Gabriel Szabó, emphasized that the successful arrival of this shipment proves the joint logistics and commercial model is sustainable and scalable.

Strategic Use of Caspian Resources

MVM contributes through its condensate trading capabilities, backed by its stake in the Shah Deniz offshore gas field, while MOL leverages its refining and logistics infrastructure. Réka Martini, Director of Strategy and Transactions at MVM Group, noted that this joint effort is a step toward strengthening domestic energy security in landlocked Central European nations.

Towards a Predictable Supply Chain

This shipment represents the first time Azeri crude marketed by MVM has entered the region, alongside MOL’s volumes. More shipments are expected soon, with both companies aiming to establish a regular and reliable crude supply route from the Caspian region to Central Europe.

The arrival of the first joint shipment of Azeri crude oil marks a significant step in enhancing energy security and supply diversification for Central Europe. Through the combined strengths of MVM Group and MOL Group—spanning production, trading, logistics, and refining—this partnership lays the groundwork for a reliable and long-term supply chain from the Caspian region.

As further shipments are planned, this initiative not only strengthens regional resilience against market uncertainties but also demonstrates the value of strategic cooperation in securing future energy needs.
