Germany’s largest operator of public seaports Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co said the first liquified natural gas (LNG) ship-to-ship bunkering operation at the port of Emden was performed for Volkswagen’s Siem Confucius, reports Manifold Times.
First LNG bunkering
Approximately 1,500 metric tonnes of LNG was delivered from LNG-powered bunker vessel Engie Zeebrugge onto the deep sea car carrier and the operation took around eight hours.
“Modern shipping needs up-to-date offers in ports,” said Holger Banik, Managing Director of Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co. KG and JadeWeserPort Realisierungs GmbH & Co. KG.
He added, “I am pleased that we at Emden can offer shipowners and the port industry the facilities for switching to alternative fuels.”
