  • MITSUI E&S began testing the world’s first ammonia-fueled large-bore, low-speed, two-stroke commercial engine on February 10, 2025.
  • Supports zero CO2 emissions, advancing decarbonization in the shipping industry.
  • Developed with MAN Energy Solutions and NEDO support, including ammonia fuel supply system testing.

On February 10, 2025, MITSUI E&S launched the test operation of its MITSUI-MAN B&W 7S60ME-C10.5-LGIA-HPSCR large-bore, low-speed ammonia dual-fuel engine at the Tamano Factory. With a maximum continuous output of 17,430 kW (23,700 BHP) at 105 min-1, the engine represents a major technological milestone in alternative marine fuel solutions.

Addressing Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Shipping

With the maritime industry under increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, ammonia-fueled engines offer a path to zero CO2 emissions. This development aligns with global efforts toward decarbonizing the shipping sector, ensuring compliance with evolving environmental regulations.

Industry-Leading Innovation in Ammonia-Fueled Engines

The initiative builds on the pioneering research of MAN Energy Solutions (MAN ES), which has conducted extensive ammonia-fuel testing at its Copenhagen research center. The prototype test at Tamano Factory marks the world’s first ammonia-fueled trial on a large-bore, low-speed, two-stroke commercial engine, reinforcing MITSUI E&S’s leadership in sustainable marine propulsion technology.

Advancing Fuel Supply System Technology

Beyond engine development, MITSUI E&S is also engaged in designing the ammonia fuel supply system and other peripheral equipment, with support from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) under the “Integrated Project for Ammonia-Fueled Ships.” This phase of testing focuses on ensuring safety, efficiency, and performance before full-scale deployment in commercial vessels.

Commitment to Carbon-Neutral Maritime Solutions

As a leader in marine propulsion systems, MITSUI E&S is committed to advancing sustainable maritime logistics. By developing ammonia dual-fuel engines and fuel supply systems, the company plays a crucial role in accelerating the transition toward carbon-neutral shipping, supporting global sustainability goals.
