Florida International Terminal (FIT), controlled by SAAM Terminals, has achieved Level 1 certification under the Green Marine programme, following the progress made throughout 2024, reports an official release.
This milestone reportedly marks a transition for FIT from a registered participant in 2023 to a company officially accredited for its environmental performance.
Diligent monitoring of all pertinent regulations
The programme addresses key areas including biodiversity protection, air, water, and soil quality, waste management, emissions quantification, and community engagement.
Among FIT’s recognised advancements were diligent monitoring of all pertinent regulations, proactive measures to reduce community exposure and mitigate potential adverse impacts from its operations, and the maintenance of strong relationships with community stakeholders.
Additional achievements included the implementation of comprehensive environmental initiatives, prevention of spills and leaks into the environment, and enhanced efforts to divert waste from operations.
Green Marine’s certification system is based on five levels reflecting the degree of compliance with environmental indicators. Level 1, attained by FIT, recognises organisations that fully comply with current environmental regulations.
In the areas of spill prevention and stormwater management, FIT achieved Level 2, distinguishing itself by implementing additional best practices beyond compliance. The higher levels require continuous improvement, culminating in environmental excellence and leadership at Level 5.
“This achievement is the result of our entire team’s commitment to a more responsible port operation, aligned with the environmental challenges of our industry. Being part of Green Marine motivates us to improve continuously,” said Eduardo Cabrera, FIT’s Senior Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Manager, who received the certification during the GreenTech 2025 conference.
