Geoquip Marine, a leading provider of offshore geotechnical solutions, is enhancing its fleet with the addition of Geoquip Silvretta, a platform supply vessel (PSV) being converted into a geotechnical services platform. As reported by Offshore Energy, the conversion is taking place in Norway and includes the installation of Geoquip’s largest drilling rig, the GMTR150. The project, designed to reduce the vessel’s carbon footprint and fuel consumption, is scheduled for completion in spring 2025.
Conversion Highlights
The Geoquip Silvretta, originally built as a DP2 PSV by Green Yard Kleven, is being transformed to meet the demands of geotechnical investigations. The GMTR150 drilling rig will enable high-quality site investigations across varying sea states while maintaining operational efficiency.
The conversion will leave the propulsion system and main machinery unchanged. Green Yard is collaborating with the vessel’s original designer, Marin Teknikk, to customize the ship’s interior. Modifications include the addition of a moonpool, relocation and installation of cranes, expansion of the shelter deck, increased office space, and a new accommodation block.
Sustainability at the Core
Geoquip Marine is committed to sustainability in this project, reusing and recertifying as many components as possible to minimize waste. Steel removed during the moonpool installation will be recycled locally in Norway, and new components will utilize high-scrap-content European steel. These initiatives align with the company’s efforts to reduce environmental impact while ensuring operational reliability.
Enhanced Capabilities
Upon completion, the Geoquip Silvretta will be equipped with modern amenities, including an offshore laboratory for real-time data analysis and expanded accommodation and meeting facilities. This will enable Geoquip to deliver high-quality geotechnical services in a range of challenging environments.
The upgraded vessel is set to begin operations with a project in northern Europe, showcasing Geoquip Marine’s strategic commitment to meeting growing global demand.
Leadership Vision
Rune Olav Pedersen, Geoquip’s incoming CEO, emphasized the significance of this project. “Expanding our fleet with this new vessel, complete with our flagship GMTR150 drilling rig, enhances our ability to deliver exceptional site investigations in varied weather conditions. This investment highlights our commitment to sustainability and operational excellence,” he said.
Future Outlook
With the Geoquip Silvretta’s conversion, Geoquip Marine is advancing its mission to provide sustainable and efficient offshore geotechnical solutions. The company’s strategic focus on innovation and environmental responsibility positions it strongly in the global market for offshore site investigations.
