As the shipping industry navigates a historic transformation toward net-zero emissions by 2050, marine industry leaders gathered at Nor-Shipping in June to address the regulatory pressures and technological solutions driving this change.
With new rules like the IMO carbon levy (2028) and EU ETS surcharges tightening their grip, fouling control systems and data-driven solutions are emerging as essential tools in improving vessel efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.
Stricter Regulations Reshape Maritime Operations
New and upcoming mandates such as:
-
Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII)
-
FuelEU Maritime
-
EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS)
-
IMO’s carbon levy (from 2028)
…are forcing shipowners to actively manage fuel usage and emissions or risk steep fines — up to $380 per tonne of CO₂. The agreement passed at IMO MEPC 83 is the first international carbon pricing measure for shipping and could cut emissions by 8% by 2030, according to UMAS.
Role of Fouling Control Systems in Emission Reduction
Fouling control coatings reduce underwater resistance, helping ships burn less fuel and maintain high CII grades. For example:
-
Intercept 8500 LPP helped one VLCC vessel cut around 8,500 tonnes of CO₂ over five years, maintaining a top ‘A’ CII grade.
Marine coatings alone, however, are not enough. Shipowners must rely on expert consultation and proven in-service data to choose the right high-performance hull coatings that are tailored to vessel type, route, and speed.
Data-Driven Solutions and Predictive Tools
With rising ETS surcharges (from 40% in 2024 to 100% by 2026), demand is growing for smart solutions.
Intertrac Vision, a big data tool, enables:
-
Simulation of fuel and CO₂ savings
-
Prediction of ROI on coating schemes
-
Selection of optimal coatings based on operational profiles
These tools allow shipowners to make evidence-based decisions for both cost control and sustainability goals.
Preparing for the 2028 Carbon Levy
With the 2028 carbon levy looming, shipowners must act fast. Those who continue using carbon-intensive fuels without mitigation strategies will face hefty financial penalties and route inefficiencies.
Companies that invest early in proven solutions — like fouling control, emissions data analytics, and coatings expertise — will be better positioned to remain compliant and competitive in a more sustainable shipping industry.
The maritime sector stands at a turning point. Regulations are tightening, but solutions like advanced coatings and digital tools offer a clear path forward. With nearly 150 years of marine experience, companies offering integrated hull performance services are uniquely positioned to help shipowners not only meet compliance but also improve vessel performance and cut emissions sustainably.
