On June 22, four Ghanaian seamen have finally been rescued and flew back home after a 66 month ordeal.

They survived without electricity and on little food, water and medicines aboard the ship, Magnum V, which got grounded near the tiny Butcher Island off Mumbai.

The vessel got grounded after a snag, while on its way to Sri Lanka.  Since then the four people stuck onboard, Abakah Francis 60, Issah Sawudu 49, Idriss Mohammed,48, and Mohammad Mustapha 38, were survived on supplies given by the Mumbai Police, fisherfolk, the NUSI and sparse rations provided by the shipowners.  Luckily, they did not contract any major illness or diseases.

Last month, Justice Kathawalla ordered the vessel to be seized.  However, monsoon winds and rough sea conditions delayed the operation.

At last, on Wednesday, a maritime lawyer, Abhishek Khare, helped those sailors with a Bombay High Court order, which allowed the seafarers to be rescued.

Following the order the rescue mission was carried out by NUSI.  They also have provided for the sailors’ airfare and other formalities during the process.
