Cécile Rafat, Ship Pollution Prevention Officer at France’s Directorate for Maritime Affairs, says the country is preparing to test drone-based emissions monitoring for emission control area (ECA) compliance later this year, and is also working to develop a fuel calculator to provide support to enforcement efforts, Business Green reports.

On-going discussions:

As reported earlier, France, at a European Council meeting last month, called for the creation of a Mediterranean Sea ECA.

Government officials are said to have been in discussion with environmental NGOs since the European Council meeting in order to establish further details for an ECA in the Mediterranean Sea.

Awareness on air pollution:

In December, it was reported that BirdLife Malta, along with Germany’s Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) and other Mediterranean environmental NGO partners, had launched an international project aimed at increasing awareness of air pollution generated by cruise ships to support the declaration of a Mediterranean Sea sulfur ECA.
