Freighter Crew Rescued Amid Rough Seas Off Greek Island

On December 22, twelve crew members were reportedly safely rescued from a freighter caught amid rough sea conditions in Greece.

What happened?

The freighter ‘Little Seyma’ was enroute from Russia to the Cyprus loaded with loaded with 2,700 tons of flour when it was caught in the rough seas.

The vessel reportedly ran aground on a rocky islet off Mykonos island in the “heart” of the Aegean Sea. the vessel raised a distress call after it reportedly faced winds up to 9 on the Beaufort scale were blowing in the area when she issued a distress call.

Suffered water breach:

The freighter suffered water ingress in its engine room after running adrift and using the freighter’s rescue boat the seamen sought shelter in a rocky cave on the Tragonissi (goat) islet.

Despite the prompt mobilization of Greek emergency services, and due to the adverse weather conditions, the nine Ukrainians and three others could not be evacuated until Saturday afternoon.

Strong winds hamper rescue effort:

The gale force winds prohibited the two Greek Air Force and Greek Navy helicopters or Coast Guard and Greek Navy vessels to airlift the men for many hours.

The mariners were eventually transferred safely to Mykonos port with the help of a fishing boat, with the Coast Guard’s guidance. None of the mariners were injured during the incident and were reported to be safe.
