Freighter Disabled Off Italian Coast

On May 22, a freighter was disabled due to engine failure and had to be towed to the port for further repairs.

What happened?

The freighter ‘Ades’ was enroute from Odessa towards Salerno when it suffered a technical glitch and was disabled miles from the coast.

The vessel suffered an engine failure and a fault in the electrical system shut off its power system and the vessel started drifting. The 13 crew members onboard the vessel when the incident occurred.

Towed to safety

The ship was monitored by the Coast Guard who issued navigation warnings and alerted the MRCC in Rome. At dusk, a patrol boat was scheduled with the task of illuminating the stricken vessel by making it visible to other ships.

The captain of the vessel requested for assistance and the Coast Guard deployed a tug to tow it into the port of Gioia Tauro.
