On December 26, a freighter developed list when it was in the vicinity of Portsmouth Harbour and became unstable.
What happened?
The freighter ‘Mekhanik Yartsev’ started developing a list in the Solent, close to Portsmouth Harbour. The vessel was enroute from Riga to Warrenpoint when the cargo shifted.
The freighter was immediately moored at Bravo Anchorage in the Solent with the help of the tug ‘SD Independent’ nearby which had accompanied her from St. Helens and the Sandown lifeboat circling her.
Vessel unstable:
The freighter started developing a considerable list towards its port side, though it was able to run on its own power but became unstable.
The vessel is currently anchored in the Solent and a pilot vessel was assessing the vessel’s stability and cargo.
The 13 crew members onboard the freighter were reported to be safe. The Coastguard issued navigational safety broadcasts every half hour to warn ships travelling in the area.
