Freighter Main Suspect in Black Sea Pollution

A general cargo vessel has been identified as a suspect for causing environmental pollution in the Black Sea.

What happened?

The Turkish cargo ship ‘Nehir’ was identified as a suspect based on satellite images and AIS data which is used to track ships.

The incident came to light when environmental officials found oil floating in the Bulgarian waters.

Oily waste dumped:

On July 22, the vessel which was traversing through the Bulgarian Coast sneakily dumped its oily waste in Bulgarian water and escaped.

Investigation launched:

The Bulgarian authorities have already warned their counterparts in Ukraine where the ship is headed too. Ukraine has agreed to provide assistance to Bulgaria regarding this incident once the ship docks in Ukraine port.
