On March 8, a cargo vessel raised a distress call after it developed a leak off Finland’s south coast.
What happened?
The Panamanian flagged cargo vessel, which was enroute to St Petersburg started to develop a leak when it was located off Finland’s south coast.
The Finnish Border Guard Maritime Rescue Centre received a distress call about a freighter which developed a leak and that the engine room was flooded about five metres deep.
No immediate danger
Though the vessel had taken on water, it was determined that the vessel was not in immediate danger and its condition was reported to be stable.
The owner of the vessel is charting out plans to tow the vessel to the port for further investigation and repairs.
Engine room sealed
Crew members say that the engine room is firmly sealed so that water cannot spread into other parts of the ship. As of late afternoon, there was no suspicion that the freighter had run aground.
The Border Guard says it is ready to evacuate the ship quickly if needed. It has summoned the nearest available assistance vessel, the Arctia company’s Nordica icebreaker as well as its own guard vessel Tursas and a maritime rescue helicopter.
The twenty two crew members were reported to be safe and no pollution to the environment was reported.
