A freighter trapped in ice on Lake Erie for several days has been freed and is now on its way to Canada, according to AP News.
Successful Rescue
The vessel, a 663-foot Canadian vessel carrying 17 people, became stuck in ice on Lake Erie while returning to Canada after delivering a load of wheat in Buffalo, New York. The ship wasn’t damaged, and the crew remained safe. Freighters in the Great Lakes often encounter ice during winter, but sometimes the ice conditions become too challenging to navigate.
The U.S. Coast Guard initiated rescue efforts, deploying an icebreaking ship. On Saturday, a second icebreaker arrived to assist in freeing the vessel. The Canadian Coast Guard also provided support. The vessel is now expected to continue its journey through Lake Erie and up the Detroit and St. Clair rivers to Sarnia, Ontario, where it will remain for the winter. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter monitored the situation, and a third icebreaker was scheduled to arrive on Monday as a precautionary measure.
