Wawrinka beat Federer on Tuesday, winning 6-4, 6-3, 7-6, (7-4) to set up a semifinal clash with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Wawrinka called it as his best clay-court match in a grand slam.
Sharapova exits
Maria Sharapova, last year’s winner, had won over her illness to reach the second week but she could not win over Lucie Safarova last Monday.
Sharapova fell 7-6, (7-3), 6-4 to the 13th seed in the fourth round, making it the Russian’s earliest exit in southwest Paris since crashing out in round three in 2010.
