We4Sea, a young maritime technology start-up focussed on increasing the fuel efficiency of seagoing ships, has launched a new version of their fuel efficiency platform. With the launch, We4Sea will be able to monitor and report on the fuel consumption and emissions of ships without installing sensors.
Reduce sulphur emissions
In less than 2 years, legislation to reduce shipping sulphur emissions is expected to almost double the fuel costs of ships. The International Energy Agency calls this “the most dramatic change in fuel specifications in any oil product market on such a large scale”. This calls for immediate action and will increase market demand for fuel-efficient ships.
At present, less than 10% of all sea-going vessels have an active fuel monitoring system on-board, as these systems require a significant investment in sensors and hardware, and require port visits to be installed.
State of the art platform
We4Sea developed a now released a new version of their cloud platform, that does not need sensors or hardware to start monitoring. The data-driven tool offers advanced solutions to optimize the performance ánd reduce fuel consumption and emissions of seagoing ships.
We4Sea collects vast amounts of operational data of a ship, such as position, speed, heading and draft. This data is collected and enriched with other data sources, such as weather conditions, wave heights, currents and wind. The proprietary Digital Twin modelling of We4Sea transform this big data pool into actionable management information on how to optimize the use and configuration of a ship.
Using the latest Big Data technology, We4Sea can now monitor and report on any conventionally powered ship, bringing a ship online within 24 hours. There is no need to install sensors or hardware, and therefore no up-front investments. This absence of high investments will impact the market adoption of fuel monitoring systems significantly.
Dan Veen, CEO of We4Sea: “We are very happy to announce this new feature today. Using the latest technology, we offer the first non-CAPEX fuel monitoring solution in the shipping market. There is no need to buy and install expensive equipment, plan a port-visit or accept a few days off-hire. Monitoring and reporting of any ship can now start within 24 hours.”
Michiel Katgert, CTO of We4Sea: “We offer the ship-owner tools to make fuel-efficiency monitoring easy. Saving fuel will not only have a direct impact on their financial results, but it will also improve the sustainability of their operations and lead to a reduction of CO2.”
