- Tanker to be Cleaned and Prepared for Dismantling.
- Uncertain Fate of Second Tanker Following Kerch Strait Incident.
- Oil Spill Impacts Russia and Ukrainian Territories After Storm.
The authorities have completed the removal of fuel oil from a sunken tanker that ran aground in the Kerch Strait in mid-December 2024. This presents a crucial step in cleanup efforts following the maritime accident, reports Safety4Sea.
Cleaning and dismantling work is already underway
The vessel will be taken for a cleaning process after the fuel removal, and then it is prepared for breaking. It has been attempted that all the residual fuel should be extracted safely from the vessel before it is retired.
The fate of the other vessel, which sank in the same incident, is still under question. That vessel, having sunk beneath the water, poses a challenge in cleanup and recovery processes.
Impact on Russian and Ukrainian Territories of the Oil Spill
The oil spill, caused by a storm on December 14-15, 2024, resulted in oil being washed ashore along the coasts of the Krasnodar region in Russia and Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine including Crimea and Berdyansk Spit, which lies about 90 miles or 145 kilometres north of the Kerch Strait.
Cause of the Spill
The spill resulted from a storm that severely damaged two ageing tankers. One of the vessels snapped in half after being struck by a large wave, with the bow sinking and the stern eventually succumbing to the storm.
The two tankers involved in the incident were carrying a combined total of 9,200 metric tons of oil products, contributing to the scale of the environmental impact.
