- Light Oil Sheens Detected in Surrounding Waters.
- Fuel Expected to Evaporate and Break Down Naturally.
- Patrol Craft, Spill Response Teams and Drones Deployed.
A Singapore-flagged tanker collided with a Malta-registered bulk carrier on Monday morning (Sep 1), about 8 kilometres south of Tanah Merah, leading to a spill of marine gas oil into the sea, reports CNA.
Crew Safety
The incident took place around 9:25 AM, as confirmed by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). Thankfully, all crew members from both vessels are safe and accounted for, although one crew member did report some minor bruises and sprains.
Oil Spill and Environmental Impact
The MPA noted that “light oil sheens” have been spotted near the affected vessel. They explained that the master of the Marine Dynamo reported that marine gas oil, which is used for the vessel’s propulsion and stored in a tank above the waterline, spilt due to the collision. Marine gas oil, a lighter fuel similar to diesel, is expected to evaporate and break down quickly in the environment.
Response Measures
In response, the MPA has deployed patrol and spill response craft to investigate and assist, including efforts to disperse the oil sheens. Drones have also been sent out to monitor the situation. Navigational broadcasts have been issued to warn passing vessels, ensuring that there’s no impact on navigational safety.
Investigation and Public Advisory
The MPA has confirmed that an investigation into the incident will take place. Meanwhile, the National Environment Agency has advised the public to steer clear of swimming and primary water contact activities at East Coast Park beach until further notice, just as a precaution.
