Fukui Seisakusho And ClassNK Partner On Hydrogen Dual-Fuel Engine Safety Valves

9

At the Gastech 2025 exhibition in Milan, Fukui Seisakusho Co., Ltd. and ClassNK signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly advance the development of ultra-high pressure safety relief valves for hydrogen dual-fuel engines.

This collaboration builds on earlier joint work for liquefied hydrogen carriers and represents a step forward in supporting hydrogen as a future marine fuel.

Building on Previous Achievements

In 2023, Fukui and ClassNK initiated a study on installing safety relief valves for liquefied hydrogen carrier cargo tanks, formalizing the effort with an MOU signed at Gastech 2023. The study led to the issuance of a type approval certificate this year for the PILOT-type low pressure safety relief valve (PSL-MD type). This success laid the foundation for their latest partnership.

Focus on Ultra-High Pressure Valves for Hydrogen Fuel Systems

The new MOU centers on developing safety relief valves capable of meeting advanced requirements for hydrogen dual-fuel engines, including resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and high sealing performance. Under the agreement:

  • Fukui Seisakusho will develop the RPS-type high-pressure safety relief valves tailored for hydrogen fuel applications.

  • ClassNK will review the valves under its rules and standards when type approval applications are submitted.

By combining Fukui’s engineering expertise with ClassNK’s certification authority, the collaboration aims to accelerate the safe adoption of hydrogen as a marine fuel. Their work contributes to the broader goal of introducing hydrogen propulsion systems, supporting the shipping industry’s decarbonization pathway and energy transition.
