Marine Insight reports that the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) and Marine AI have launched a groundbreaking research initiative — the first of its kind — designed to teach autonomous ships how to interpret and act upon critical navigational data.

This eight-month project aims to enable Marine AI’s GuardianAI system to understand ADMIRALTY Sailing Directions and Radio Navigation Warnings, which are traditionally written for human navigators. The collaboration will focus on transforming these vital maritime publications into structured, machine-readable formats that autonomous vessels can process safely and accurately.

According to the UKHO, this effort marks a crucial milestone in advancing Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) technology. By translating complex navigation data into formats that artificial intelligence can interpret, the project bridges a critical gap between human-based navigation and digital autonomy.
