Future Plans For Sustainable Maritime Transportation

198

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), Japan Engine Corporation, IHI Power Systems Co., and Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. have embarked on a pioneering initiative to construct the world’s first ammonia-fueled medium gas carrier (AFMGC). Supported by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), the project aims to revolutionize maritime transportation, contributing to global decarbonization efforts.

Background and Goals

The consortium seeks to achieve net-zero emissions in international shipping by transitioning from conventional fuels to ammonia. With a focus on building an ammonia value chain, the project aims to address the increasing demand for ammonia, both in Japan and globally. Simultaneously, it aims to strengthen Japan’s maritime industry by leveraging its technological capabilities to lead in environmental performance and safety.

Vessel Overview

The AFMGC, with a planned delivery date in November 2026, is a 40,000 m3 type ammonia fuel carrier. Equipped with Japan-made engines, including an innovative ammonia-fuel dual-fuel two-stroke main engine and a four-stroke auxiliary engine, the vessel is designed for optimal performance and environmental sustainability.

Challenges and Progress

The project has faced challenges in designing ammonia-fueled vessels, addressing issues such as ammonia toxicity, flame retardancy, and nitrous oxide emissions. Notably, the prototype vessel received Approval in Principle in September 2022, demonstrating its safety and environmental viability. Safety measures, including ClassNK’s risk assessment, have been integrated into the vessel’s specifications.

Future Schedule

With a target completion date of November 2026, the consortium plans to manufacture engines, conduct detailed vessel studies, and prepare operation manuals. Post-completion, the vessel will undergo operational demonstrations to assess performance, environmental friendliness, and practicality, providing valuable insights for further enhancements. The consortium aims to establish itself as a pioneering force in the development of ammonia-fueled vessels.
