Game-Changing Baltic Gateway: Poland’s Ambitious Świnoujście Port Project Takes Shape

9

Poland is set to establish its second deep-water container port, augmenting its existing facilities and significantly boosting its shipping infrastructure. The new terminal is designed with a large-scale goal — handling annual throughput of 2 million TEU.

Key technical and strategic features include a 17-metre deep approach channel, approximately 2,900 metres of quay length and a 70 kilometre access fairway able to accept vessels up to around 400 metres in length. Construction is expected to start in 2027 and conclude by 2029. The project will involve reclaiming roughly 186 hectares of new land and dredging about 19 million tonnes of seabed material.

The investment value of the terminal and complementary infrastructure is estimated at USD 2.35 billion. Support infrastructure includes a 47-hectare logistics zone, ten rail tracks each 800 metres long, and a dedicated two-kilometre access road to reduce urban traffic impacts. The marine and landside infrastructure will be developed by the Szczecin–Świnoujście Seaports Authority (ZMPSiŚ). A terminal-operator tender will follow the infrastructure works.

According to ZMPSiŚ, this development is considered “the most ambitious project in our 75-year history” and will position Poland among the leading ports in Europe. This port project is significant for enhancing Poland’s connectivity to global container-trade networks and improving access for Central and Eastern European shipping flows.

This development touches on several major themes relevant to the maritime sector: port infrastructure, shipping technology, and maritime logistics. For ship-owners, seafarers, logistics professionals, maritime students and policymakers, the project signals a surge in capacity, deep-water access and streamlined landside logistics that could reshape freight flows in the region.
