The International Group of P&I Clubs has announced the appointment of Rolf Thore Roppestad, CEO of Gard, as its new Group Chair following the Annual General Meeting held in London on 11 November 2025. He steps into the role previously held by Andrew Cutler, who served as Chair since November 2022.
During Cutler’s tenure, the Group navigated an increasingly complex landscape, marked by geopolitical tensions, expanding sanctions regimes, and the merger of two member Clubs. His leadership was recognised for strengthening collaboration across the Group during a period of heightened regulatory and operational pressures.
Roppestad expressed his appreciation for the confidence placed in him and highlighted the importance of continuity and stability as the Group advances its work. He emphasised that the IG system remains a vital pillar of global shipping, contributing directly to maritime safety, environmental protection, and support for seafarers.
He also noted that today’s geopolitical volatility places additional responsibility on the Group’s framework, which plays a key role in ensuring coordinated and effective responses to maritime casualties, environmental clean-ups, and community compensation efforts.
Group CEO Nick Shaw welcomed the appointment, acknowledging Cutler’s contribution over the past three years and expressing confidence in Roppestad’s leadership as the Group continues its mission of safeguarding the maritime ecosystem and supporting the mutual P&I structure.
