Gard Joins Wista 40 by 30 to Promote Women in Leadership

  • Gard has signed the Wista 40 by 30 pledge, aiming for 40% female leadership in the maritime industry by 2030.
  • The initiative promotes gender diversity in an industry where women are underrepresented, especially in leadership.
  • Gard is committed to improving gender balance across all levels, particularly in leadership roles.

On August 15, 2024, Gard announced that they’ve signed the Wista 40 by 30 pledge, an initiative aimed at achieving 40% female leadership in the maritime industry by 2030. This voluntary commitment is promoted by WISTA, the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association, a global network of over 4,300 female professionals across 56 countries in the maritime sector, reports Gard.

Addressing Gender Gaps

The Wista 40 by 30 pledge seeks to tackle the significant underrepresentation of women in leadership positions within the maritime industry, while fostering a more diverse and inclusive culture.

Lars Lislegard-Bækken, Chief Operating Officer at Gard, expressed the company’s pride in supporting the initiative, stating, “This is a great initiative that we at Gard are proud to take part in. Wista 40 by 30 is something we can proudly front and want to use our influence to make a positive change.”

Current Gender Ratio

According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), women make up less than 2% of the world’s seafarers. Shore-based roles in the maritime sector also face a disparity, with women holding only 16% of the workforce and just 12% of senior management positions.

At Gard, the overall gender balance at the end of 2023 was 56% female and 44% male. However, leadership roles were less balanced, with 39% female and 61% male. Gard recognizes the need for continued efforts to improve gender representation in leadership.

Aina Bugge Solheim, Vice President and Head of HR at Gard, said, “We know we still have work to do to promote a more evenly distributed gender representation across leadership levels and across various types of positions. This is something we will continue to focus on, alongside other diversity dimensions.”
