On Oct 19, 2017, the tanker “Bow Guardian” suffered a gas leak on the Elbe off Stade. Reports say that explosive gas escaped the ship through a high pressure vent due to a pump leakage.
The incident reportedly took place while the tanker was waiting to unload a cargo of LPG in the industrial port. The coast guard established a safety zone of 1000 meters around the vessel and stopped the ship traffic.
Nearly 120 rescue forces, including the personnel of the Analytical Task Force from Hamburg, were kept ready to support. Nearly 200 nearby houses in Abbenfleth were evacuated for safety reasons temporarily. All windows and doors in the neighbourhood were kept closed till the forces managed to seal the leak.
