Gasum Expands LNG And Bio-LNG Bunkering Capacity With New Vessel Celsius

40

Gwiasum has announced the chartering of a new state-of-the-art LNG and bio-LNG bunker vessel, Celsius, which will begin operations in 2027. The vessel, built by RMK Marine in Istanbul, will be jointly owned by Gasum and Swedish shipping company Sirius Shipping.

The investment aligns with Gasum’s strategic goal of increasing LNG and bio-LNG availability in Northwestern Europe, as the demand for low-emission fuels in the maritime industry continues to grow.

Strengthening a Long-Standing Partnership

The investment aligns with Gasum’s strategy to meet the growing demand for LNG-powered vessels in the region. CEO Mika Wiljanen emphasized the importance of LNG and bio-LNG as immediate solutions for maritime decarbonization:

“Ship owners are now seeing that switching to LNG and bio-LNG is one of the best ways of reducing emissions in maritime logistics already today, instead of waiting for other technologies that have not yet reached maturity or the required scale or infrastructure. This state-of-the-art bunker vessel is an important investment in our ability to continue to deliver the quality service our customers expect from us now and in the future”

Sirius Shipping’s Managing Director Jonas Backman echoed this sentiment, highlighting the partnership’s decade-long history and commitment to sustainable shipping:

“This newbuilding project is proof of that we are getting closer towards our vision – to become the long term first choice, for our colleagues, customers, and for society. We’re proud to be able to continue the collaboration with Gasum that started in 2012, and with this new and improved LNG vessel, it will continue for decades”

Key Advancements in the Celsius Vessel

The design of Celsius incorporates insights from the Coralius – Gasum and Sirius Shipping’s previous bunker vessel, with nearly 1,000 successful LNG bunkerings since 2017. The new vessel will feature:

  • Enhanced fuel efficiency and improved tank insulation
  • Larger cargo capacity for better operational flexibility
  • Upgraded fender handling for increased safety
  • High-performance Gas Combustion Unit (GCU) for faster vessel cool-down operations

Supporting Maritime Decarbonization

With stricter emission regulations in place, Gasum’s expanded services allow shipping companies to transition to cleaner fuels cost-effectively. In 2024, Gasum launched a maritime pooling service to help vessels meet FuelEU Maritime regulations.

Environmental benefits of LNG and bio-LNG:
100% removal of SOx and particulates
85% reduction in NOx emissions
20% lower CO₂ emissions compared to MGO
90% lower life-cycle emissions for bio-LNG

Gasum’s Renewable Energy Goals

By 2027, Gasum aims to deliver 7 TWh of renewable gas annually, including biomethane and e-methane, leading to an estimated 1.8 million tons of CO₂ reductions per year for its customers.

This latest investment underscores Gasum’s commitment to scaling sustainable maritime fuel solutions, ensuring long-term energy security and emissions reductions for the shipping industry.
