- Gasum has partnered with shipowner Bernhard Schulte to power the 7,500 m³ vessel Kairos with renewable bio-LNG.
- The FuelEU Maritime regulation allows emission pooling, where over-compliant vessels can offset the emissions of under-compliant ones.
- FuelEU Maritime, effective from January 1, 2025, requires a 2% initial reduction in fuel carbon intensity, rising to 80% by 2050.
Gasum has signed an agreement with shipowner Bernard Schulte to fuel a 7,500 cubic meter vessel using renewable bio-LNG. This initiative aims to reduce the vessel’s carbon footprint and offer compliance benefits under the FuelEU Maritime regulation for Gasum’s pooling customers, as reported by Offshore Energy.
Pooling for Emission Reduction and Compliance
Starting from January 1, 2025, FuelEU Maritime mandates vessel owners to reduce the carbon intensity of their purchased fuel, beginning with a 2% reduction and progressively increasing to as much as 80% by 2050. To simplify compliance, the regulation permits the voluntary pooling of emission reductions across vessels. This allows vessels that exceed compliance to offset the emissions of those that fall short, essentially providing compliance as a service.
Pooling is described as the most effective and dependable method for shipping companies to lower compliance costs while simultaneously supporting the development of low-emission fuels. As both the charterer of the vessel and the producer and distributor of bio-LNG, Gasum ensures substantial emission reductions for the pool. The Nordic company manages the pooling system, supplies ultra-low emission bio-LNG, and provides over-compliance solutions to assist shipping companies with under-compliant vessels.
Key Opinions on the Collaboration for Emission Reductions
Jacob Granqvist, Vice President of Maritime at Gasum, stated that the new step makes it easier to maintain the necessary emission reductions within their pool at all times. He emphasized that, based on expert estimates, a significant compliance deficit is expected by the end of 2025, highlighting the importance of this initiative.
Christian Breuel, Managing Director of Tankers at Bernhard Schulte, expressed satisfaction with Gasum’s decision to use bio-LNG, noting that the vessel “Kairos” will further reduce its carbon footprint. He emphasized the need for collaborative efforts and solutions to achieve decarbonization in the shipping industry.
