GCMD Launches Free Calculator for GHG Pricing Framework

  • The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) has introduced a cost and compliance calculator in line with the newly approved GHG emissions pricing framework from IMO’s MEPC 83.

  • The tool is designed to help maritime stakeholders evaluate the financial and compliance impacts of the two-tiered, GHG Fuel Intensity (GFI)-linked pricing system.

  • It supports fuel assessments for HFO, LNG, B24 biofuel, e-ammonia, and bio-methanol.

Singapore-based GCMD announced on Tuesday (15 April) that its team has developed a free calculator to assist maritime players in understanding the implications of the recently approved GHG emissions pricing framework introduced during the 83rd session of the International Maritime Organization’s Marine Environment Protection Committee, according to Manifold Times.

This framework adopts a two-tiered GHG Fuel Intensity (GFI)-linked pricing system, which has been the focus of intense industry attention.

“To help make sense of it, our CEO Prof. Lynn Loo started with handwritten trajectory calculations to break down the core workings,” GCMD said in a social media post.

Building on these foundational calculations, the GCMD team created a simple and accessible calculator to give users a clearer picture of how the GFI-linked system could impact their operational expenditures.

A Tool for Smarter Maritime Planning

The calculator allows stakeholders to explore cost and compliance impacts across various fuel types, which include Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO), Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), B24 Biofuel, E-Ammonia ,and Bio-Methanol.

GCMD emphasized that the calculator should be used as one input in decision-making processes and that its outputs should be considered alongside other economic and operational considerations.

“Whether you’re assessing fuel options, planning newbuilds, or just trying to get a feel for what this might mean for your operations — this tool offers a useful first-cut view. For added clarity, we’ve included the workings on the side so you can trace the calculation process,” GCMD added.

By offering transparency in its design, the calculator not only simplifies complex pricing structures but also empowers maritime businesses to proactively prepare for upcoming compliance requirements.
