  • Hapag-Lloyd Outperforms Maersk in Reliability, Achieving 99% Performance.
  • Gemini Cooperation Surpasses Premier and Ocean Alliances in Early Performance.
  • Hapag-Lloyd’s Reduced Exposure to Transatlantic Trade Contributes to Higher Reliability.

The Gemini Cooperation, which is a joint venture between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk, has shown excellent performance, recording a 91% schedule reliability level in its first month of sailing. This result is higher than the Premier and Ocean alliances’ reliability levels, marking a strong beginning for the new partnership, reports Port News.

Reliability Performance of Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk

Statistics from eeSea, which were delivered by its founder Simon Sundboell during S&P Global’s TPM25 conference in Long Beach, California, showed the performance of Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd as of 1 March. Hapag-Lloyd had a stunning 99% reliability rate, while Maersk posted 88% reliability for the same period. Sundboell explained that Hapag-Lloyd’s superior performance was due to its lower exposure to the transatlantic trade.

Performance Milestones of the Gemini Cooperation

The Gemini Partnership had stable reliability over a number of key performance milestones. On 27 January, having made 4 port calls, the partnership registered 100% reliability. As the port calls rose, reliability was still strong: 95% after 55 port calls, 94% after 114 port calls, 90% after 151 port calls, and 88% after 137 port calls. As comparison, the Premier Alliance had a 44% reliability rate during the same timeframe, while Ocean Alliance only registered 25% during the period.

Analysis of Alliance Performance

Sundboell expressed surprise at the Premier Alliance’s results, describing them as “surprisingly low.” Similarly, he referred to the Ocean Alliance’s performance as “disappointingly low.” These findings highlight the early success of the Gemini Cooperation compared to its competitors in the industry.

Commitment to High Performance Standards

Hapag-Lloyd’s CEO, Rolf Habben Jansen, emphasized the carriers’ dedication to maintaining high performance standards. He stated, “Both carriers are committed to maintaining high performance standards,” underscoring the focus on delivering agreed reliability.

Early Days for the Gemini Cooperation and Premier Alliance

Sundboell acknowledged that it remains “still early days” for both the Gemini Cooperation and the Premier Alliance, given the limited number of headhaul routes completed thus far. As the alliances continue to expand their operations, their long-term reliability performance will become clearer.
