A search for a general cargo ship unaccounted for since Friday after it set sail for China from Taipei Harbor the same day has come up empty so far, a senior official at the Maritime and Port Bureau said Sunday.

The Coast Guard Administration is still searching for the cargo vessel, named “Hsin Fa Erh,” said Liu Chih-hung, deputy director-general of the bureau.

Liu said Taipei Harbor’s last contact with the Hsin Fa Erh was at 7 p.m. Friday, when its skipper surnamed Tsai reported they had encountered strong winds and rough waves and were planning to sail back to the port.

The ship should have returned to Taipei Harbor at around 11 p.m. Saturday, but it never arrived, according to Coast Guard officials, and no contact has been made with the boat since Friday, they said.

In addition to the skipper, there are four Taiwanese crew members and one Indonesian worker on board the cargo vessel.
