An oil tanker suspected of being part of Russia’s “shadow fleet” used to evade sanctions, was found adrift in the Baltic Sea, reports Euro News.
Vessel Towed
A tugboat successfully towed the adrift Panamanian-flagged tanker to safety off the German island of Rügen.
The tanker, carrying 99,000 tons of oil from Russia to Egypt, experienced a period of drifting. While there was no immediate environmental threat, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock described the incident as a danger to security and tourism in the Baltic Sea.
The German news agency dpa reported that the situation did not pose an immediate environmental risk.
Shadow Fleet
Greenpeace has accused the vessel of being part of Russia’s “shadow fleet,” a collection of older tankers used to circumvent sanctions imposed following the invasion of Ukraine.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock condemned Russia’s actions, stating that the incident demonstrates how Russia endangers European security not only through the war in Ukraine but also through sabotage, disinformation, and the use of “dilapidated oil tankers.”
