On January 15, Damen Shipyards officially handed over Germany’s first all-electric catamaran (E-Kat) ferry to AG Reederei Norden-Frisia. Designed to accommodate 150 passengers, the vessel will serve the route between Norddeich and Norderney in the East Frisian Wadden Sea, marking a significant step in the transition towards sustainable maritime transport, according to Damen Shipyard.

Advanced Design for Efficiency and Comfort

The 32-metre E-Kat has been specifically designed to operate on a 30-minute route, with 28 minutes allocated at each stop for passenger boarding and disembarkation. Constructed at Damen’s shipyards in Poland and the Netherlands, the ferry features twin aluminium hulls, keeping weight to a minimum while ensuring stability in the shallow waters of the Wadden Sea. With a draught of just 1.2 metres, it can navigate these waters efficiently while reaching speeds of up to 19 knots. The vessel is powered by two 600kW electric motors driving its twin propellers, providing smooth and emission-free travel.

Commitment to Sustainability

AG Reederei Norden-Frisia has consistently demonstrated its dedication to sustainability, and the E-Kat is a crucial part of its broader zero-emissions strategy. The ferry will operate with a CO2-neutral footprint, drawing its power from onshore solar panels. This initiative aligns with global efforts to reduce maritime emissions and support cleaner transportation solutions.

Future Operations and Industry Impact

Joschka Böddeling, Sales Manager at Damen Shipyards, expressed confidence in the vessel’s long-term success. He highlighted the high-quality construction of the ferry and its expected role in enhancing sustainable passenger transport. With the summer season approaching, the E-Kat is set to showcase the effectiveness of fully electric ferry operations, setting a benchmark for future developments in the maritime industry.
