On December 17, the giant container ship MSC Regulus reportedly collided with a fishing vessel off the coast of Peru, killing five.
The fishing boat “Don Gerardo 2”, which had left port on December 14, capsized and sank. There were 23 people on board the fishing vessel of them five have been confirmed dead, another 12 were rescued with injuries, and still six remain missing.
The “Don Gerardo 2” from Manta was carrying passengers near the Ecuador – Peru sea border when the incident happened.
The container ship, which had sailed from Callao on Dec 15 and was bound to Lazaro Cardenas, remained at the accident site. The search area had a diameter of 15 miles. Several civilian ships joined the SAR operation.
