The biggest container ship to ever dock along the East Coast will be stopping at the Virginia International Gateway in Portsmouth.
The Virginian-Pilot reports the COSCO Development will arrive May 8. The ship is about 1,200 feet long — which is only 250 feet shy of the length of the Empire State Building.
The ship can carry more than 13,000 containers at once.
The COSCO Development’s first U.S. East Coast stop will be in Virginia, after a journey that starts in Hong Kong and includes visits to several Chinese ports before crossing the Pacific Ocean and through the Panama Canal.
The Port says a ship of this size will call at the port every week, starting in May.
