  • Four Maritime Associations Unite to Electrify the Shipping Industry.
  • GAME Coalition Formed to Tackle Maritime Emissions Through Electrification.
  • New Global Alliance Aims to Fast-Track Electric Vessels and Port Solutions.

Four prominent maritime nonprofit organisations have joined forces to create the Global Alliance for Maritime Electrification (GAME), a fresh coalition dedicated to speeding up the shift towards zero-emission maritime transportation. The founding members of GAME include the International Electric Marine Association (IEMA), the Zero Emission Ship Technology Association (ZESTA), the Maritime Battery Forum (MBF), and the European Onshore Power Supply Association (EOPSA). Together, these organisations represent more than 250 member companies from around the globe, reports Marine Link.

Focusing on Inland, Nearshore, and Commercial Vessels

Initially, GAME will concentrate on electrifying inland and nearshore vessels, such as workboats, ferries, and passenger ships. The alliance’s goal is to accelerate the development of zero-emission solutions by tapping into global expertise and coordinating efforts across research, advocacy, and industry partnerships.

“We see tremendous potential to fast-track zero-emission solutions for the world’s workboats, ferries and passenger vessels,” said Adria Jover, President of IEMA. “By aligning our strategies, GAME members will amplify each other’s voices, reduce redundancy, and better serve this industry transition.”

Tackling Barriers to Electrification

Electrification is backed by reliable technologies and can deliver quick, scalable reductions in emissions. However, GAME points out several significant hurdles that still stand in the way of widespread adoption. These challenges include disjointed policy frameworks, inadequate infrastructure at ports, and a lack of funding for research and development.

Three Strategic Pillars Guide GAME’s Mission

GAME’s approach revolves around three main strategies:

  1. Industry Representation – Coming together at global industry events and forums to advocate for a unified message.
  2. R&D Collaboration – Working together to develop technical standards, share roadmaps, and seek out joint funding opportunities.
  3. Policy Advocacy – Collaborating with organisations like the IMO, ISO, and national governments to align standards and foster confidence in investments.

“Batteries are key enablers of zero-emission transport, but they must work in concert with other clean technologies,” said Syb ten Cate Hoedemaker, Managing Director of the Maritime Battery Forum. “This collaboration is how we ensure an effective and timely transition.”

Global Outreach and Next Steps.

GAME is kicking things off by putting together joint position papers and ramping up engagement in key areas like North America, Europe, India, China, and the South Pacific. By working together strategically and advocating for shared goals, this alliance is set to speed up global maritime electrification and help transition to a cleaner, more sustainable shipping industry.
