A new organization, the Global Ethanol Association (GEA), has been launched in Switzerland to promote ethanol as a sustainable fuel. The non-profit aims to redefine ethanol’s use across various industries, beginning with its application in the international shipping sector.
Key Mission and Founding Members
The GEA’s primary mission is to unlock ethanol’s full potential as a clean, scalable, and globally available fuel. The association brings together a wide range of industry leaders, including ethanol producers, shipowners, engine manufacturers, and fuel suppliers. This collaboration is designed to drive research, influence policy, and advocate for ethanol on a global scale. WinGD, a major marine engine manufacturer, has joined the GEA as a founding member, highlighting the industry’s commitment to this initiative.
Focus on Maritime Decarbonization
The association’s first major initiative is to integrate ethanol into the maritime industry’s low-carbon fuel mix. This is in response to increasing pressure on the shipping sector to reduce emissions. The Marine Fuel Sector Initiative is designed to address both the supply and demand sides of the equation. According to GEA co-founder Morten Jacobsen, new multi-fuel marine engines will allow shipowners to use ethanol, providing flexibility and helping to meet decarbonization targets. The initiative will support pilot projects, fuel trials, and infrastructure planning to accelerate the adoption of ethanol as a bunker fuel.
Open Call for Collaboration
The GEA is actively inviting companies and organizations to join as members. The association is looking for participants from various sectors, including ethanol production, shipping, engine manufacturing, logistics, and research. Members will work together on technical standards, investment strategies, and policy advocacy to expand ethanol’s use not only in shipping but also in other sectors like aviation and road transport.
