Global Ports, sealed a pivotal 50-year deal to oversee cruise services at Liverpool Cruise Port, capitalizing on the burgeoning Northern European and British and Irish cruise markets, reports Reuters.
Liverpool stands as a pivotal cruise destination for both American and European travellers, serving as a pivotal entry point to the Northern European and Round Britain cruise circuits.
Industry Dynamics
The cruise travel sector has experienced a resurgence over the past year, with travel agents and U.S. cruise operators anticipating travel volumes in 2024 to surpass pre-pandemic levels.
This surge is attributed to the continued affordability of cruises compared to land-based alternatives, appealing to travellers across various income brackets.
Current Challenges and Opportunities
Liverpool Cruise Port currently grapples with infrastructure limitations hindering its ability to meet escalating demand, as highlighted by Global Ports.
The company anticipates assuming operational control this month.
Investment and Expansion Plans
In alignment with the agreement with Mersey Docks And Harbour Company, Global Ports pledges a substantial investment of up to £25 million ($31.4 million) toward enhancing the port’s infrastructure.
This infusion of capital is projected to bolster Liverpool Cruise Port’s capacity,
enabling it to accommodate over 200,000 passengers in 2024, up from 186,000 in the previous year.
Upon the completion of infrastructure development, the port’s annual passenger capacity is forecasted to surpass 300,000.
