- Seven Criteria Framework for Tasks, Training, and Appraisals.
- Role Definition by Rank to Ensure Clarity Onboard.
- Tailored Training Programs to Support Career Growth.
The Global Maritime Forum’s (GMF) All Aboard Alliance has emphasised the importance of having clear and transparent criteria for appraisals, task assignments, and rank-specific training. This is crucial to ensure fairness and equal opportunities for all seafarers, no matter their gender, age, or nationality, reports Safety4Sea.
Third of Nine Sustainable Crewing Guidelines
This is the third instalment of the nine ‘Sustainable Crewing Guidelines’ that were launched in March 2025. These guidelines have been developed over several years of research and real-world trials involving more than 400 seafarers, and they aim to set a standard for best practices on board vessels.
Seven Rank-Specific Criteria for Fair Crewing
1. Role Definition by Rank: Clearly outline the responsibilities, expected skills, and typical tasks for each rank, making sure all crew members can access this information through manuals or digital platforms.
2. Tailored Training Opportunities: Create training programs that align with the specific responsibilities of each rank and provide clear paths for upskilling to support career growth.
3. Transparent Appraisal Criteria: Establish measurable and objective performance indicators, such as task completion, safety compliance, and teamwork. Make appraisal guidelines available so crew members know what to expect.
4. Objective Task Assignment: Assign tasks based on rank, skills, and experience rather than personal preferences or biases. Whenever possible, rotate tasks to ensure everyone gains equitable exposure and experience.
5. Clear and Inclusive Communication: Consistently share role definitions, training opportunities, and appraisal criteria. Use gender-neutral and inclusive language in all communications.
6. Commitment to Diversity and Equal Opportunity: Reinforce policies that promote equal treatment, diversity, and inclusion. Keep an eye on recruitment, promotions, and task assignments to avoid any disparities.
7. Accountability and Feedback Mechanisms: Offer channels for crew members to provide feedback on tasks, training, and appraisals. Regularly review policies to ensure they align with fairness, transparency, and inclusivity goals.
