- Six leading Ro-Ro operators and ClassNK partnered with Smart Freight Centre to launch standardized GHG emission calculation guidelines.
- The guidelines enable accurate Scope 3 emission tracking for Ro-Ro vessels, including car carriers.
- Developed under the ISO 14083 and GLEC framework, the model ensures transparency and stakeholder involvement.
- SFC plans to publish ship-level emission data to promote consistent and data-driven decarbonization across the sector.
In a significant move toward decarbonizing maritime logistics, six major Ro-Ro shipping companies, along with classification society ClassNK and international non-profit Smart Freight Centre (SFC), have jointly introduced standardized guidelines for calculating greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity in Ro-Ro vessels, including car carriers. This initiative, launched through the Global Ro-Ro Community (GRC), aims to address inconsistencies in emission reporting and support accurate Scope 3 emission tracking for shippers. The guidelines mark a key advancement in aligning the maritime sector with global climate goals, as outlined in a report published by ClassNK.
Industry Collaboration Brings Clarity to Emissions Calculations
To meet the growing demand for transparent and consistent emissions data, the six GRC members collaborated under the coordination of SFC to develop a unified model for calculating GHG emissions from Ro-Ro operations. This model was built through open dialogue with stakeholders, including shipping companies, cargo owners, and third-party verifiers, ensuring both fairness and credibility.
The result is a set of guidelines grounded in ISO 14083 standards and aligned with the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) framework. Introduced at SFC’s Smart Freight Week in Amsterdam, the model now serves as a public reference on the SFC website.
Going forward, SFC will gather ship-level environmental performance data and publish average emission intensity figures, setting the stage for more precise industry benchmarks. This effort marks a foundational step in unifying emission tracking practices and accelerating the shipping sector’s contribution to climate action.
