The Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) reaffirmed Greece’s dominant position in the global maritime industry, with Greek shipowners managing 20% of the world’s fleet. Their influence is even more pronounced in key shipping sectors, overseeing 25% of bulk carriers, 30% of tankers, and 25% of LNG carriers worldwide, according to Safety4Sea.

Beyond bulk and tanker shipping, Greece maintains a notable presence in liner shipping, accounting for 8.1% of the global container ship fleet and 8.3% of the world’s vehicle carrier fleet.

Greece’s Economic Contribution and Maritime Leadership

A McKinsey report underscores Greece’s consistent ranking among the top global maritime nations, leading in shipping capacity based on deadweight tonnage. The Greek shipping industry significantly impacts the domestic economy, generating around $14 billion and supporting approximately 150,000 jobs, both directly in seafaring and ship management and indirectly across various related sectors such as hospitality, real estate, and media.
