Several prominent Greek shipping companies, including Costamare, Star Bulk, and the Angelikoussis group, have sold older bulk carriers to focus on modernizing their fleets. According to Port News, these companies are investing in newer, more efficient vessels, as part of their strategic efforts to remain competitive in the evolving shipping industry.
Costamare’s Strategic Fleet Realignment
Costamare, owned by Kostis Konstantakopoulos, has sold 15 older bulk carriers over the past 18 months, including the bulker Triton, to streamline operations. Meanwhile, the company has acquired six modern capesized bulk carriers, boosting its capacity and efficiency. Costamare now manages more than 100 dry bulk carriers and 68 containerships.
Star Bulk and Angelikoussis Group’s Modernization
Star Bulk, led by Petros Pappas, has sold 23 older vessels while acquiring Eagle Bulk’s fleet, bringing its total to 160 vessels. The Angelikoussis group has also sold older ships, including the 174,000-dwt Maran Prosperity, and is investing in LNG-powered vessels, with future projects targeting alternative fuels like ammonia.
