Greek shipping companies took center stage at the third annual ESG Shipping Awards International, winning gold in seven out of ten categories and claiming half of the total 32 awards presented. The event, held under the auspices of Greece’s Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy and the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping, celebrated excellence in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance across the maritime sector, reports Greek City Times.
The ceremony highlighted Greek shipping’s global leadership in sustainability, with prominent winners including:

International Participation Reflects Global Reach
While Greek companies swept the majority of top honors, international players were also recognized, underscoring the awards’ expanding global reach. Pacific Basin, Lemissoler Navigation, and Oldendorff Carriers were among the non-Greek winners who received gold awards.
Several companies, including Aida Cruises, Berge Bulk, Capital Group, Chandris Group, Contships, OSM Thome, and Star Bulk, were recognized with multiple awards.
Honoring Visionary Leadership
The ESG Motivational Leadership Award recognized two influential figures for their pioneering contributions to sustainable shipping:
- Marily Frangista, Managing Director, Franco Compania Naviera
- Semiramis Paliou, Chairperson, Diana Shipping and Helmepa
Both were honored for their longstanding commitment and inspirational leadership in promoting ESG principles in the maritime sector.
Evolving Priorities in Global Shipping
Speaking at the event, George Alexandratos, President of the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping, stressed the importance of ESG in today’s industry landscape:
“Shipping has always been a sector of responsibility, resilience, and respect—long before ESG became a global framework. But today, ESG is no longer optional; it is a necessity, a standard, and most importantly, an opportunity to modernize.”
Veteran shipowner Panagiotis Tsakos echoed this sentiment, reflecting on the enduring values of Greek shipping:
“For decades, if not centuries, we have lived by three principles: do your work to the best of your ability, honor your word, and take care of your people and community. These awards embody that spirit.”
From National Initiative to Global Platform
First launched in 2023 with a focus on the Greek market, the ESG Shipping Awards have rapidly evolved into a global benchmark for sustainability in shipping. The 2025 edition marked a significant milestone, welcoming a broader international audience and reaffirming ESG as a catalyst for positive transformation in the industry.
