Greek Tanker Arrested for Smuggling Oil

On 28 August, the Libyan coast guard detained an oil tanker on suspicions of smuggling oil out of the country.

What happened?

The Libyan coast guard officials based on a tip, intercepted the Greek owned oil tanker ‘Levante’ and detained the vessel on suspicions over smuggling oil out of Tripoli.

Crew arrested:

Navy spokesman Ayoub Gasim announced in Tripoli, “The Libyan Coast Guard has seized the ship, which is estimated to be about 149 meters long, trying to smuggle 6,000 tons, equivalent to 6 million litres of oil. The tanker was seized off Zawia, and that there were 20 crew members on board, mostly Filipinos. An investigation was now underway”.

A company spokesman told, “We have no communication [with the tanker] so far. We are not in a position to give any information”.
