Green Bunkers Launches In Spain To Drive Transparency And Clean Fuels In Maritime Bunkering

8

Green Bunkers, a newly launched venture backed by Baghdadi Capital, has officially started operations in Spain with an initial €5 million investment. Positioned to transform the €100 billion maritime bunkering industry, the company’s mission is to bring transparency, efficiency, and sustainability to a sector long known for its opacity.

A Transparent and Sustainable Bunkering Platform

Green Bunkers enters the market at a critical time when shipping is under mounting regulatory and environmental pressure. The inclusion of the maritime sector in the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) will increase costs tied to emissions, projected to reach €8.4 billion in 2025. Against this backdrop, the company aims to enable shipowners and charterers to access not only traditional fuels but also sustainable alternatives such as hydrogen, methanol, and certified biofuels.

The platform offers digital tools for fuel traceability, real-time fleet monitoring, carbon credit management, and CO₂ offsetting options. It is also the first Spanish platform directly linking shipowners and charterers with suppliers, ensuring price and emissions transparency alongside financing support.

Building Green Corridors and Expanding Globally

Green Bunkers plans to spearhead the creation of green shipping corridors by guaranteeing consistent access to low-emission fuels across multiple ports. The company is also working with port authorities to advance cold ironing solutions allowing vessels to shut off engines while docked and is exploring onboard carbon capture technologies.

Spain will serve as the company’s international hub, supporting expansion across Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia by 2026, with entry into the Americas planned for 2027. To address liquidity challenges in the bunkering sector, the firm also intends to provide up to €50 million in financing for bunkering operations, bridging gaps for shipowners and securing payments for suppliers.

With Spain as its launchpad, Green Bunkers aims to redefine the future of maritime bunkering by combining sustainability, transparency, and financial innovation. Through green corridors, digital traceability, and clean fuel adoption, the platform seeks to lead the industry toward a more efficient and environmentally responsible future, setting the stage for a global network of sustainable bunkering hubs.
